Hiking from the front door

The holiday house lies right on the hiking trail between Bühler, the Hohe Buche and Trogen. Many walks start at the door, so the car can stay put.

Four walks from the house

From a short evening stroll to a day hike up a viewpoint. All walking times are from the house.

Themed trail «Rond om Bühler»

Circular8.8 kmjust over 3 h

Bühler's circular trail passes right by the holiday house: over the Steig and the Wissegg to the Hohe Buche, on via Weissbach and the Kriegersmühle on the old mule track, and back through Steinleuten. 21 information boards (in German) tell of mule drivers, Paracelsus, animals, plants and Appenzell customs. Awarded the «Wanderbär» prize in 2024.

To the Hohe Buche

The short evening loop. On a clear day the view stretches across Lake Constance to the Allgäu and the Vorarlberg Alps. The old mule track from St. Gallen to the Rhine Valley once crossed the Hohe Buche.

Up the Gäbris

Over the Wissegg pass to the viewpoint above Gais (1250 m) with views of the Alpstein. Return the same way, or descend to Gais and take the Appenzell Railways back to Bühler.

To Trogen

about 5 km1¾ hmostly downhill

Over the Hohe Buche down to Trogen with its Landsgemeinde square and stately town houses. Above the village lies the Pestalozzi Children's Village with its visitor centre. Return by Appenzell Railways via St. Gallen.

Walking times are estimates without breaks. Bühler station is 1.5 km away: about 35 minutes downhill, a good 45 minutes back up.
